The Politics of Prejudice

Targets of prejudice have continued to change over time.

What has brought on this recent rise in nativism, nationalism, and populism, encouraging a resurgence of prejudice similar to what was visible around the Industrial Revolution? Is it the result of rapid cultural diffusion aggravated by the effects of globalization? 
Politicians have been utilizing classic fear-driven rhetoric or "divide and conquer" methods to create a common enemy or scapegoat, which oddly still seems to be an effective tactic in uniting certain groups of people towards a common cause.
